How Wind Affects Vacuum Cup Performance

by Jessica Smith When using a below-the-hook vacuum lifter to maneuver a heavy load, it is absolutely essential that control of that load is maintained throughout the entire process. For this reason, wind is one of the most important factors to consider before using a lifter. If the wind is blowing too hard, lifting may not be an option for you and your crew. In some cases, the wind can be severe enough to actually cause a load to drop, damaging it and possibly injuring any crew members that are nearby. But if it is just a calm breeze and you want to go ahead as planned, there are a few things you can do to ease the process and work safer. When wind is present, it can catch the load you are lifting and cause it to sway and become unmanageable. To avoid this situation, the load must be supported and held still by one or two people who are not operating the lifter. There are some vacuum lifters with support handles attached, but there are also those without any. And since many loads are flat and lacking any convenient handles, it becomes necessary to create those handles. This can be accomplished by using Wood's Powr-Grip hand cups. Simply attach them to the load wherever you need precise control in positioning a load in windy situations. Advise all other crew members to stay clear of the lifter until the load has been put into place and is fully supported. If a load is being lifted to a high location out of reach, guide-lines (ropes) are required. Attached to the pad frame of the vacuum lifter or to hand cups attached near the bottom corners of the load, guide lines can be used from the ground or a scaffold, either to keep a load from swaying uncontrollably or to help maneuver a load into the right position before it is installed and released. For safety reasons, always keep the red-line vacuum indicator on hand cups in view during the entire lift in order to ensure there is no vacuum loss. While you cannot control whether or not there is wind, you can control your lifter and the load you are maneuvering. So take the extra step and get a grip where you need it. When you work smart with Wood's Powr-Grip products, you will be blown away by the results.
